One of the most desired features of a home is hardwood flooring. It provides a polished high end look to any space and is something that many want in their home. Those who want hardwood flooring have two choices which include professional hardwood floor installation Portland OR or tackling this DIY project. Either way the installation process is the same. Here are the steps to installing hardwood floors.
First, any pre existing carpet or soft flooring must be removed to prepare the subfloor. In order to do so a pry bar or pliers should be used to pull up any flooring. This should begin at the corner and move on from there. Once flooring is removed the tack bar along the perimeter of the room should also be removed.
Once the tack bar is removed, search the floor for staples that may have been left over from carpeting. When the floor is free of staples, remove any glue residue from the previous flooring with the help of a glue dissolving solvent. It is important for the subfloor to be clean. This is then followed by sweeping, installing oriented strand board (OSB) onto the subfloor with the use of a standard staple gun and stapling red rosin paper onto the OSB.
When the subfloor is prepared installation can begin. Initially chalk or a pencil will be used to mark the location of joists. Joists are basically support beams for floors. Now a 3/8 inch measurement should be made out from the baseboard. This has to be done due to the fact that hardwood expands and contracts as the weather changes.
Next, the longest straight wall should be located. This is the starting point of installation. Begin by placing the end of a board at the baseboard line previously marked. The board should be perpendicular to the floor joist in order to provide proper support. Once placed correctly the end of the board should be nailed to the joist. When that the first board is in place, installation is continued by fitting the tongue and groove ends together and using a pneumatic stapler to secure the floor in place.
Overall, the installation process of hardwood flooring is simple. To make the process even simpler prefinished hardwood can be used. Whether it is done professionally or on your own the outcome can be flawless. For those taking the do it yourself approach be sure to purchase extra flooring, lay flooring out before attaching to ensure that you like how it looks and be sure to have enough materials such as staples and nails.
